Salads on the Run

When it comes to lunch or dinner, there’s not always the time or the place to make smart choices. But now there’s a restaurant that offers healthy, quickly.

“It’s called Croutons, and it has two locations in San Diego. There’s one in Carlsbad and one in the La Jolla Village area. I call it salad on the run,”

San Diego magazine food critic Robin Kleven Dishon said. “They do pannini sandwiches on ciabatta bread, and also some pita stuffed sandwiches, but really the name implies this is a place you go to get a variety of salads,” Dishon said. “They have two sizes, small and large. The small salads run about $5.50, and there’s more than enough there for a meal. They range anywhere from pear and blue cheese with caramelized nuts to a classic Santa Fe salad with grilled chicken. “There’s a barbequed chicken salad, even a Buffalo chicken salad, if you want to have something kind of spicy,” Dishon said.

“One thing I like about it is you order at the counter and then go sit down. It’s in a shopping center, but there’s pleasant seating outside.” Fast food doesn’t always have to be fat food.

“In this case, conveniences does not add up to way too many carbs and regrets the next day,” Dishon said. At Croutons in La Jolla and Carlsbad, the health conscious crowd gets their greens on the go.
